Monday April 28, 2025 - Still Frosty in the Garden

Image
With the start of the gardening season just a few days away, I know everyone must be anxious to get out and play in the dirt after being cooped up inside over this long winter. I just wanted to remind you that it is still much too early to think about transplanting seedlings. At 5am this morning, the temperature was -5°C! Seeds in the ground might survive this weather, but seedlings won’t stand a chance. It seems Mother Nature isn’t quite ready to hang up her winter shawl in favour of that summer dress just yet!

Sunday, April 20, 2025 - What is the Best Animal Manure for the Garden?

Image
There are many factors to consider when determining which is the best manure for you to use in the garden, like age of manure, cost to buy, distance to travel, ease of spreading, etc. If all factors are equal, then by far, the best manure to use in the garden is bird manure. Here’s why… Animals produce two types of bodily wastes; liquid waste (urine), and solid waste (feces). Mammals eliminate their bodily wastes in two separate actions; urine in one action and feces in a different action. Birds combine the two streams together and eliminate both in a single action. This is important… One of the main active ingredients of commercial fertilizer is urea, which is also the main ingredient in urine. It is the urea that provides the nitrogen-rich component that plants require for growth. There are other nutrients like phosphorus and potassium present as well. See the chart to compare the nutritional values for the different animal species.

Sunday April 13, 2025 - Spring Update for the Garden

Image
Hello gardeners, The 2025 growing season is fast approaching, so I thought I would update you on the garden progress so far… ·          Until a few days ago, the garden was still covered in at least one foot of snow. The recent stint of sunshine, rain, and wind has all but melted the snow away. Of course, that means the resulting moisture went into the ground and has made it quite soft. Needless to say, no vehicle traffic permitted until the topsoil dries out. ·          We have decided to expand the garden into a second field, so we currently have unlimited spots available. Please tell your friends! ·          It is time to pay your rental fees for the season if you not already paid. Individuals will be sent a reminder shortly. If you are unsure as to what you owe, please contact us immediately. ·        ...
