Friday, May 31, 2024 – STOP Putting Garbage in the Compost

Image
STOP putting garbage in the compost! Only organic material that will decompose naturally is to go into the compost bin and compost pile. This means leaves, grass, plant matter, vegetable scraps, etc. Plastic bags, plant trays, rubber gloves, yogurt containers, Ziplock bags, and plastic plant markers are all GARBAGE! Put GARBAGE in the GARBAGE cans provided, not into the compost!

Sunday, May 26, 2024 – Theft in the Garden

Image
I have the sad duty to report that we have had our first known theft in the garden. Someone stole two IBC water totes from the storage pile next to the fence, along with two 2” ball valves from two other totes. The thefts have been reported to the police. While we make every effort to keep the garden secure and safe for all concerned, the lesson to learn from this is not to leave anything behind in the garden that you are not prepared to live without.

While we were sleeping last night, it started to rain. A light rain is falling right now. Environment Canada forecast calls for rain showers all day today, turning to full rain by late night. The field is quite soft, so vehicle traffic into the garden is temporarily suspended until further notice.

This photo was taken at 6am this morning. It reads -1°C. We are definitely experiencing colder weather than normal this spring. You might want to wait a few weeks before you transplant any seedlings.

Thursday, May 16, 2024 – Soft Field – No Vehicle Traffic

Image
It has been raining at the garden since last night, so the field has become a little soft. We have barricaded off the driveway, so no vehicle traffic is allowed at this time. You are free to park on the gravel driveway and walk in to your plot. We have temporarily suspended water hauling to avoid damaging the field with our heavy equipment.

Wednesday, May 15, 2024 – Garden Vacancy Available

Image
We have just received word that a gardener will not be able to tend their plot this year, so they have returned it back to us. Accordingly, garden plot # 70 has become available to rent. Before we advertise it for rent to the general public, we wanted to offer it to existing gardeners or their family and friends. It will be rented first-come-first-served, so if you have any interest please respond by telephone call or text message as soon as possible.

The commercial contractor has been rototilling the garden plots for the last two days. He makes two passes perpendicular to each other to ensure maximum depth from 8” – 12” deep.

Monday, May 6, 2024 – Light Rain in the Garden Today

While we were sleeping last night, it started to rain. A light rain is falling right now. Environment Canada forecast calls for rain showers this morning, turning to full rain this afternoon. Up to 25mm (1") is expected. Our planned manure spreading is postponed and the driveway barricades will be going up until further notice.

Sunday, May 5, 2024 – New Plot Markers Installed

Image
We were able to make and install garden markers on the new plots yesterday. This will make it much easier to find your plots. Just remember to stay in-between the lines!
