Growing Green Onions
Green onions are one of the most widely used vegetables in the kitchen, and are quick and easy to grow. Green onions, also known as scallions, are not generally grown for their bulbs, but for their flavorful greens and tender stems. You can grow them in the garden and in pots.
Here is a step-by-step guide:
Choosing the type of onion
· There are different varieties, such as green onions (long onions) or spring onions. Choose the one you prefer.
Obtaining onions
· You can buy already grown onions at the market or use leftover onions you have used in the kitchen. Onion roots can grow back.
Preparing the soil
· Make sure the soil is rich in organic matter, loose and well-drained. You can mix garden soil with compost.
Planting
· Seeds: sow the small seeds 1/4 inch apart in 3 inch wide bands or in a grid pattern, planting the seeds 1/4 inch deep.
· Using onions : If you use kitchen onions, cut off the top leaving at least 2-3 cm of onion. Place the cut part in water or plant directly in the soil.
· Spacing: If planting in the ground, leave about 10-15 cm between each onion. If using a pot, make sure it has enough space.
Location
· Place the onions in a location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sun per day.
Watering
· Green onion plants have shallow root systems and dry out quickly so maintain a lightly moist soil, but not soggy. Water regularly, especially during hot days. Onions need consistent watering to grow well.
Fertilizing
· Apply a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks to provide additional nutrients.
Harvesting
· Onions are usually ready to harvest in 8-12 weeks. You can begin harvesting them when they reach the desired size, cutting off the green part as needed.
