Friday, November 28, 2025 - Natural Herbicide for Weeds
As every gardener knows, getting weeds in the garden is as natural as a fish swimming in the ocean. Sometimes though, there just isn’t enough time to pull them all, so we opt to use a quicker method by applying herbicide. Below is a recipe for a natural weed killer that is more environmentally friendly than using synthetic chemicals.
Natural Herbicide Recipe
· 1 gallon of white vinegar
· 2 cups Epsom salts
· ¼ cup biodegradable dish soap
INSTRUCTIONS TO MAKE AND USE HERBICIDE
Mix the Ingredients
Mix all the ingredients in a large container or spray bottle. Shake well before every use
Apply to weeds
Spray the mixture directly onto the leaves of the weeds on a hot, sunny day with no wind. The high heat helps open the plant's leaf pores, allowing the solution to penetrate more effectively.
Wait for it to work
The weeds should begin to shrivel within a few hours and turn brown and flaky the next day.
Repeat as needed
This is a contact killer, so it won't prevent new weeds from growing. You may need to repeat the application on larger or perennial weeds after a few days.
WHY IT WORKS
Vinegar
Contains acetic acid that acts as a contact herbicide, breaking down the weed's cell walls and drawing out moisture.
Salt
Enhances the drying process by pulling water from the weed's cells.
Dish soap
Acts as a surfactant, helping the solution stick to the weed's leaves rather than just rolling off.
IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR USE
Non-selective
This spray will kill or damage any plant it touches, so use it with caution and avoid spraying it on desirable plants, lawns, or garden beds.
