Saturday, May 30, 2026 – Garden Changes and Update

 

Here is an update of some of the happenings in the garden this week:

New Garden Plots

30 new plots have been created and are available for rent. Well… 27… 3 have already been rented. If you are an existing gardener with us, we can simply amend your existing lease agreement to include the new ones. New gardeners will have to complete and sign a new lease agreement.


 

Free Chicken Wire

We have been given a bunch of chicken wire to dispose of. If you want some to make a pea or bean fence, or perhaps need some at home, just ask and it can be yours. There is a limited quantity, and it is offered first-come-first-served. So act quickly!

 

Harvesting Branches and Sticks NOT PERMITTED

We have a lot of dead standing and leaning trees in our tree stands, called widow-makers for a reason, that fall over without warning. You pulling and pushing on branches and sticks may just be enough force to dislodge a tree to fall over and KILL YOU! Therefore, you or your guests may not roam outside of the defined garden area.  

 

 

Severe Wind Storm and Rain Storm

We experienced a severe wind storm on Friday afternoon (May 29), with winds up to 100 kms per hour, and then a severe rain storm dropping up to 50mm of rain in mere minutes. This may explain why some of your plants look the way they do. More trees fell over in our tree stands as described above.

 

Garden Temporarily Closed to Vehicle Traffic

Due to the massive amount of rain received during the recent rain storm, the garden driveways are soft and muddy. To avoid damage to the fields and your vehicles, the garden is temporarily closed to vehicle traffic. With the frequency and amount of rain expected in the near future, we anticipate that this restriction will be in place for at least the upcoming week.

    We have had several reports that deer have been feasting in the garden at night. While annoying to be sure, it is a fact of nature that we just have to deal with pest control of one kind or another. Here are some ideas that you can use to help keep the deer from snacking on your treasured plants… Choose Deer-Resistant Plants While hungry deer may eat just about anything, they tend to avoid prickly and fuzzy foliage . And, they don’t really like heavily fragranced plants, either. Experiment with different textured and aromatic plants. Try using them as borders for your garden beds.     Place Bar Soap Near Plants To keep deer away, many gardeners turn to ordinary bar soap . The scent is said to interfere with their sensitive sense of smell. Sunday, April 26, 2026 – Expanding the Garden Part 2

  Two weeks ago, I detailed some of the problems encountered while expanding the garden, like wet snow on the field and frozen ground. We overcame those issues and moved on to Step 2: ·         Remove remaining fence posts ·         Install new garden plot posts ·         Install new driveway gates   The work was proceeding nicely, then Mother Nature decided to humble us once again, by stirring up a spring squall.
