Tuesday, September 15, 2026 - First Frost in the Garden

 

We have received our first frost in the garden last night / this morning. At 6am this morning, the temperature was -2° C.

If you haven’t completed your harvest, then cover up those plants to avoid frost damage. The plants most susceptible to frost are:

    ·        Tomatoes: These warm-weather crops turn brown and die quickly when exposed to freezing air.

 ·        Peppers: Both sweet and hot peppers lack cold tolerance and drop leaves or collapse in a freeze.

 ·        Eggplants: The fruit and foliage sustain instant cell damage during a light frost.

 ·        Cucumbers: Vine leaves turn mushy and dark green-black after a single frosty night.

 ·        Summer Squash: Zucchini and yellow squash plants die back rapidly when frost touches them.

 ·        Basil: This tender herb turns black and wilts within hours of freezing temperatures.

 ·        Beans: Bush and pole bean varieties wither and die during early fall or late spring frost.
